The 2010 SAG Awards-Best and Worst Dressed & Ryan’s Roses

  THE 16TH ANNUAL SAG AWARDS

Hi Gals and Guys, Up for Some Labrish?

The Screen Actors Guild Awards–where actors honor actors for their film and television work, a celebration of one another’s entertainment contribution.  The SAG is generally on the low key spectrum of the award ceremonies and yet the nominations and wins are quite impactful because many of the voters for the SAG Awards will be some of the same voters impacting the most career defining award of all the awards, The Oscar.  A slight glimpse into the actors voyage to becoming a celebrated star is often revealed at the ceremony.  The SAG is the fourth ceremony that gives us an idea of the truly big and great movies of the year worth catching if the cinema advertisements didn’t when the films first premiered.  Two Thousand and Nine had some block busters and some quiet charmers with amazing performances.  There was something for all movie goers….The charmers—An Education, The Young Victoria, Julie & Julia , 500 Days of Summer, The Princess and The Frog and Up…and there were the tear jerkers—Precious, A Single Man, The Road and The Lovely Bones and the commercial successes—Avatar, Inglorious Basterds, Sherlock Holmes, The Blind Side, It’s Complicated and Hangover.   And the goal of television entertainment was to highlight minutiae—And when the focus is put on the line-up that fact is evidentGrey Gardens was mind bogglingly entertaining, the psychological revelations of these two women drew the audience in throughout the series and  Georgia O’Keeffe and Dexter were spellbinding, with cat and mouse facets, determination, revelations that terrified yet showed courage and determination.  And Entourage, Cougar Town, The Office, Madmen and 30 Rock were gratifying.  Every night/day there was something on television or at the theatre to spend hours of enjoyment.

Of Course there is always the red carpet that must be dealt with before the achievements and accolades are handed out. I had to watch to see if there were fashion redemptions from the Golden Globes fiascos and if there were graceful and fashionable continuities; I must say it was truly a very pleasant viewing.  There were more improvements than there were flops…There were the usual fashion challenged who just can’t seem to get it right.  Let’s trade notes and see where we end up….To the carpet we go

SAG’s BEST DRESSED

Kate Hudson in Pucci–Very statuesque, I think this is better on her than on the model on the catwalk, check out the back view below… Christina Applegate in Roberto Cavalli— is a princess. I love the way this gown falls on her and the hair, makeup and jewels are phenomenal…Truly breath-taking!  Christina Applegate, the back view as stunning as the front. My best dressed pick!
Kate Hudson’s in Pucci…back view…she has a piece of jewel caressing her back, a regal picture… Diane Kruger in Jason Wu…I love this mustard shade that is caressing her like the afternoon sun.  She is a picture perfect beauty! Diane Kruger up close, there is always a close up because she is always so stunning…..
Jennifer Carpenter in Paule Ka—she is super chic in this white mini..Her husband Michael C Hall thanked her for wearing the dress and I have to applaud the decision as well because her physique is being lorded here.  Jennifer Carpenter—her youth is highlighted and her sexiness revealed.  Definitely another side of Jennifer that has been unveiled and it’s a hit!! Julia Louis-Dreyfus in Dolce & Gabbana–I like this silhouette on Julia and fabric pattern is beautiful. I think she is absolutely gorgeous…the earrings, clutch and hair are all beautiful…
Kira Sedgewick in Vera Wang—This look is perfect for Kira’s body shape…the fit is bang on and she is radiant..we could have done without the tan line though, how long would it have taken to even the skin tone out???? Jassalyn Gilsig in Nicole Miller Signature.  This picture is flawless.  Her body is perfectly toned and the gown hugs every curve… Marion Cotillard in Elie Saab—gorgeous one shoulder mini and the shoes are hot.  Beautiful look….
Sandra Bullock in Alexander McQueen—She is stunningly radiant. I love the blue sequined details…And was her presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to Betty a hoot or what; she says, she can’t stand Betty and Betty commented on how plain Sandra is and how much she has achieved, mockingly saying anyone can make said industry strides. Oh so entertaining!  Stana Katic in Oday Shakar is oh so hotttt..I love this steel grey sequined gown.  She presents quite a grand picture Stana Katic the frontal impact – if I didn’t hear the Mischa Barton comparison I would never have thunk it…she is fabulous! —Stylist  Gina Tuso did a great job…this is quite impactful for a red carpet new-comer.
Drew Barrymore in Monique Lhuillier—Gorgeous strapless gown, the color is stunning and the ruffled layers on the skirt of the gown is beautifully done. Jane Kakrowski in Alberta Ferretti…..this one shoulder gown is elegantly fitted.  The ensemble is a flawless red carpet installment.  Totally on the mark this award season.  Edie Falco in Bottega Veneta—presents a lovely picture.  The color is great and the fit is fantastic.  Her toned body could have totally pulled off a form fitting gown but this is well done.
Lea Michele in Catherine Malandrino—Can we say gorgeous?  The color is amazing and such an upswing from the Oscar de la Renta gown at  The Golden Globes.  This is how you do it…You go Glee girl, I am so full of glee with this styling!! Ana Kendrick in Alberta Ferretti—She is radiant in this amethyst color…Another upgrade in fit and color choice from her Golden Globes look.  This is definitely flattering. Mariah Carey in a red one shoulder gown…This would not be my frist choice for Mariah but this is an improvement from last week’s Golden Globe gown.  This is good and the twins are settled and relaxed.  Well done Mariah….
Tina Fey in Ferragamo is super chic in blue…the fit is wonderful–neckline is flattering and the waist detail caresses.  Great improvement from the Golden Globe debacle.

Holly Hunter in Alberta Ferretti—she is radiant in this beautiful black gown.  She appears statuesque. The fabric layering and sheer bodice is quite appealing. I love this look.

FASHION FENCING

Jenna Fisher in a jeweled strapless bustier-chiffon skirted gown..It is sweet yet matronly.  Not a fan…The hair and earrings are lovely against her beautifully made up face..

Sofia Vergara has stepped off the glam podium wth this gown.  The color combinations are quite pretty but the material is not figure flattering to the body Sofia has…..

Mariska Hargitay in Vera Wang—the color if flattering but the high waist is just that too high; hair and makeup are lovely but the figure highlight is totally out of focus….

Neicy Nash  in a Charles Albert black and white gown….Love the hair and jewels–the necklace is a showstopper….but the gown is on the boring side….Nice fit…

Anna Paquin in Alexander McQueen is all too confusing….She is over-run with colors that are intertwining–the shoes—dress–hair and skn tone are too smilar and the dress is a little casual for this event…

Toni Collette in Rafael Cennamo—At first glance I thnk elegant and then the color combinaton and the layering become bothersome.  The flow is off and yet it’s clear the designer intended to woo us..

Lauren Velez….Hair and make-up are on point, the elegance is very evident but the gown is too mature for her and the shoes too boring…..

Cheryl Hines in this great color but the silhouette seems quite common and simplistic and the fit is off from waist to thighs and I don’t love the hair…

Christina Hendricks…an improvement from The Globes choice but this color is still not a fave…and too much action on the shoulder and yet the gown is quite simple…

Julie Benz in Ina Soltani—All ruffles and curls, I do not like the color of the gown but the make-up is flawless…I have to say an improvement from her may carpet showings…I will miss you on Dexter but welcome to Wisteria Lane, all assets eloquently highlighted….

Michele Monaghan in Calvin Klein is conflicting in this one sleeved A-symmetrical gown…depending on the side the eyes catch the impression varies.  I love the color combination, hair and makeup.

Rutina Wesley in a cheap looking gown, even the necklace is flawed….The body is gorgeous and needs to be adored with Haute Couture…Call me!!

Vera Farmiga in J Mendel—Wow, the pale color of this gown is wrong for her skin tone and the cut is unflattering for such a voluptuous figure, on the fence with the hair too.

Giuliana Rancic in Kaufman Franco—great color but the ruffles and fit are not flattering at all. The Globes gown was so bang on, this one not so much.

SAG’s WORST DRESSED

Brittany Curran in a one shoulder mess.  Seriously who buys or accepts a dresss that looks and fits like this?
Christine Barinski in something that should only be worn in an office in the day time or casual lunch, even then, I’d re-think it…I’m not sure if it’s the light that is shadowing the dress but wow, for someone who is so elegantly dressed in character, she has fallen quite flat on the carpet….Hugely disappointing!
Gabourey Sidibie in wow..she looks like a grandmama and the make-up is just not cute…I don’t know Gabby; I think a new stylist is in order.
Carey Mulligan in Lanvin as she wore to the Golden Globes….this dress just as poorly fitted as the last.  I don’t understand the cinching/ruching by the knees…
Dianne Argon in Georges Chakra, a strapless white gown, black belt and beautiful detail above the bust line…I don’t get the pouch on the right side of the gown, what are you packing??
Jayma Mays has done a lot better than last week at the Globes but the fit is still off.  Keep trying, it will all line up eventually….
Joan Allen in Michael Kors and a bib necklace by I don’t know whom.  The dress is ok…the print makes it casual but the necklace is bleeding what looks like champagne burlap onto the gown… The neck garb needs to be tossed in the trash can.  It has desecrated the Kors gown….
Jayne Lynch in a royal blue mess.  She looks like a Christmas gift wrap….I did not say anything last week and apparently not enough people said how bad her look was at the Golden Globes…this has taken the cake, all that material, two more dresses could be made from it.  Great color Jayne…But sweetheart, focus on the fit…less material next time.
Katrina Bowden in Tadashi…How beautiful is she and how horribly dressed.  She looks like little bo peep and the shoes, how hard is it to buy shoes that make an impact….Call me, I will seriously get you outfitted.
Meryl Streep in Balenciaga….. I like the fit of this dress but it’s inappropriate for this occasion.  Totally a dress for someplace less stately.  I like the belt touch, very hip…
Patricia Arquette in Riser Goodwyn is again looking like she is going to wiggle out of this gown or that her breath is being held so tightly that if she breathes too hard she’ll bust a seam.  The color is awful….I am a green lover but this shade looks like diarrhea gone bad and the fit is horrible… Remember Mrs. Olsen from Little House and The Prairie…Here she comes again!!

Paula Patton in J.Mendel is a high fashion mis-fit…this gown is horrible on her, she looks like a bride gone mad…who selected this gown and told her it was ok to go out like this…Such a beautiful woman but fashion is certainly not your thing, the fit is like the scene in The proposal with Sandra Bullock and Betty White–when Sandra gets fitted in Betty’s wedding gown….picture the scene and believe that you have done the same thing on the red carpet….please call.

Sarah Hyland in Alberto Makali–A stunning young woman who is looking a lot like her mommy on this fashion outing.  The gown and hair are decades her senior.  Think young, beautiful and HOT next time.

Samantha Harris….The girl with one of the best heads of hair in Hollywood and generally a stylista but this golden foiled blue strapless gown is taking me to Bollywood in a bad way.  I am not loving it.

Paula Patton…she just had to turn around so we could get the 360 degree view…I think she is starring in a movie titled Bad Clothes Happen to Beautiful People…

Ryan’s Roses with Ryan Seacrest- Episode Tiffany & Eddy

Tiffany, a housewife calls KiisFM to beg for Roses intervention.  She complains of a lack luster marriage and although there is no physical proof of her husband’s infidelity, his disregard of her, lengthy work hours, apparent boredom with the marriage, she feels there is cause for concern…If you were Ryan Seacrest and Ellen Kay, you would buy into the idea that maybe something is amiss and that an interloper could be lurking in this marital precinct…So Ryan has Patty make the call to Eddy offering the free ROSES and Eddy gratefully accepts the roses and sends them to Carmen…saying I love you…Take a listen to Tiffany being a complete narcissist…RosesTiffanyandEddy

Who is Carmen you ask, well she is his mother and Tiffany goes bunkers about him sending flowers to his mother and not to her…he explains that his father recently died of cancer and with his mom’s birthday around the corner, he felt doing something to put a smile on her face and in her heart was the least he could do.  Eddy feels justified in cheering up his mom and his nutso wife is jealous.  Insecurity comes to mind, as do control freak, nut job, psycho…Seriously, what sane person gets mad at her husband for treating his mom to roses?  Shouldn’t she encourage kind gestures to family, especially a grieving mother?  It is always interesting to me how some kids take from their parents all their lives and when the time comes to give a little back, there is generally a problem, yet the possibility of an inheritance is always on the radar…Hold up, before you jump all over my comment, let me clarify…. It is the job of one’s parents to give their children the best upbringing possible with a good education and skills to make a good life with no expectations in mind for repayment.  However, the same sense of selflessness and dedication given by many parents to their children should be reciprocated by their children.  Please tell me you saw Gran Torino, I know it’s a movie but the father/son relationship surfaces as I listened to this Roses call.   Many parents are self-sufficient and do not require financial help from their children, others do but general kindness and consideration of circumstances, recognition of milestone events, feelings and urges to give back to someone who nurtured and paved the way for a future should be freely expressed without begrudgement.

Tiffany is the type of wife who gives many of us who feel that honoring and respecting the people who helped to mold the men/women we marry bad names because of their selfish notions.  Tiffany needs major therapy, a deep probe into her nutty psyche to unlock and cure the negative energy and selfish tendencies that have driven her to this state of ruthlessness.  Men and woman who marry should really pay close attention to their partner’s treatment/regard of their family.  I’m not saying families aren’t sometimes drags but most of the times they are good people who need not be run out by the new in-law addition.  Family is forever but marriages do go asunder…Please do share your views…

Catch you later….Mauva
