Getting dressed is like creating art on a fresh canvas and unveiling a new painting with each ensemble. Sometimes there’s a specific image you want to bring to life, other times what emerges after each brushstroke of color is a complete surprise. The fun, yet challenging, task of dressing well is to create a wardrobe of many styles and color selections so that there’s always a picture ready to be unveiled for any occasion. Some of us are great at crating different color combinations while others never get the hang of it and really have no understanding of how the wrong color selections blemish their overall appearance. Get a color match done for your skin tone/eye color. This provides a guide to the colors most suited to you. Some colors are better than others for your skin tone; therefore, identifying what they are will help you present a striking yet calming/complimentary picture..
Step 2
Stay away from a full outfit of same color; always add a splash of contrasting color to break up the monotony. For instance, if you choose to wear a black suit or dress add some color to stimulate and heighten the beauty of the picture you are presenting; accentuate with strikingly bold jewelry, don a pair of leopard, red, royal blue, gold or silver shoes. If you choose to wear floral, such as a blend of green/purple combination, add a tan, cream or gold shoes. If you choose a pink/brown/rust combination, use caramel color or brown shoes. If you keep the same color head to toe, you are creating a boring outfit, nothing that will have any kind of impact on you or your audience. Many times when you are out and about beautifully dressed, you are teaching someone less fashion savvy than yourself, so do remember your audience.
Step 3
If you have limited financial resources, find a base color that you truly love and build a wardrobe of separates. If navy is your choice, buy a pair of pant or skirt; add contrast by adding royal blue or other shades of blue tops, white, wine/burgundy, black and gray. If you prefer black as your base color the pairings above will work and for gray you may add lavender, purple, fuchsia and pink. Use the darker color from the pink family with your black base.
Step 4
If you’re in your mid to late twenties, there’s sometimes a temptation to try to hold onto your under-twenty state of mind and the easiest way to feed your delusion is with your clothes. Avoid the temptation at all cost! Get rid of the polka dot balloon skirt, multi-colored leggings and stretch print pants-tee combinations. If you’re having trouble making the transition from Sally Kirkland to Teri Hatcher, Beyonce Knowles, Halle Berry or Leighton Meester, buy a fashion magazine (one with some basis in tasteful reality), buy a display outfit that looks good in the shop window (keep the colors you choose in mind) or call me, Mauva Gacitua, to help you establish a foundation you can build on, at your own pace, within your budget .
So go ahead! Put some thought into painting that picture of confidence and vitality. In no time, your friends and co-workers will be green with envy.
